The most common reason adults lose teeth isn’t decay or injury, but a bacterial infection called gum disease. Also known as periodontal disease, this condition is caused by built-up plaque in the mouth. Without treatment, gum disease can easily cause tooth loss, receding gums, and even increase your risk of certain medical conditions like heart disease! Here at Norton Family Dentistry, our in-house periodontist (gum expert), Dr. Isaac Kim, can protect your oral and overall health with comfortable, conservative gum disease treatment at our Norton, MA dental office.

Scaling & Root Planing

When gum disease doesn’t respond to more frequent brushing and flossing, we may need to perform a type of deep cleaning known as scaling and root planing. After administering a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort, we use an ultrasonic cleaning instrument to remove plaque and tartar buildup along and beneath the gumline. The roots of the teeth are then smoothed, or “planed.” This helps the gum reattach to the teeth and reduces the risk of reinfection.

Antibiotic Therapy

Even after scaling and root planing, some bacteria might still linger in the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. For this reason, we often supplement this procedure with antibiotic therapy. We can place an antibacterial medicine, called Arestin, into the pockets between your gums and teeth. The medicine gradually disperses throughout your gums to eliminate bacteria that could otherwise be inaccessible.
