Wisdom tooth removal might be your first experience with tooth extraction, as is the case for many patients. While the procedure is simple and numbing helps prevent discomfort, taking care of your mouth afterward is important so that you heal correctly. If you’re getting a wisdom tooth removed soon, here’s what you need to know right about caring for your mouth after the procedure.

Use Gauze to Protect the Wound

Expect some bleeding afterward. Change the gauze with a clean piece and bite gently to hold it in place. Bleeding should lessen within one to two days. Manage the gauze carefully for a smooth recovery.

Gently Use a Saltwater Rinse

Saltwater rinse helps remove bacteria but be gentle to not disrupt the clot. Mix one teaspoon of salt in warm water. Rinse a few times a day, after the first 24 hours. This helps with healing the removal sites without complications.

Take All Prescribed Medicine

Finish your prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection. Consistency is key for a smooth recovery and no complications.

Eat Soft Foods

Stick to soft foods for the first week or two to avoid disturbing the clot. Ask your dentist for suitable food choices.

Things Not to Do

Don’t use a straw as it can dislodge the blood clot that forms, which can lead to dry socket. This painful condition occurs when the blood clot that normally forms after a tooth extraction becomes dislodged or dissolves, exposing the underlying nerves and bone in the socket and causing discomfort.

Also, avoid intense exercise that can increase blood flow to the mouth, leading to bleeding or reopening the extraction site. Rest and avoid strenuous activities for about a week to help yourself  heal as intended.

Following the above steps will lead to a faster recovery. If you have concerns, consult your dentist for personalized guidance. By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth recovery!
